Invasion of taste

American crayfish plague the polder landscape and pose a serious threat to farmers, road managers and dike managers. These non-indigenous species are pushing their way through dikes and polders in order to lay eggs, piercing through the soil in the process. Fortunately, these small crayfish make for excellent food, and fishing for them has turned out to be a good source of income. Every week, André heads out into the polders in order to cast and retrieve 180 nets. It is hard work, but restaurants and fish traders can appreciate the quality and are eager to benefit from the catch.

Red gold

Quite literally, because a kilo of tomato seeds costs more than a kilo of gold. But no two tomatoes are alike. The range of Rijk Zwaan features more than 80 varieties. Each variety has its own flavour, shape and texture. Using state-of-the-art technology, the varieties are grown, tested and refined. But even visitors are part of the process. At the demo site’s tomato buffet, they are asked what they think of both the taste and quality of the tomatoes. This information is used to develop even better varieties.

Eye in the Sky

Jacob and his brother grow about 25 million kilogrammes of potatoes a year. They use drones in order to scan and fully utilise their land. This allows them to analyse their fields and shows them the areas that require more seeding, fertilising or watering. This kind of precision agriculture allows them to manage more hectares in less time. Even as a child, Jacob was always fascinated by technology so it’s not surprising this is his third generation of drones.

The bees’ knees

Evidently bees find a more than enough food. Beehive checks reveal that bee colony on this rooftop are strong and healthy. The honeycombs are also full of honey and pollen. Sweet!

Greenhouse with Restaurant

Using mainly found objects, bales of straw and clay plasters, they constructed a greenhouse, bar and kitchen. Together with bins of earthworms and the production of liquid manurethe acquaponic installation creates a closed cycle which produces aromatic herbs, tomatoes and other fresh produce for the menu of the restaurant.

A family affair

A lot of work has to be done in a very short period of time, so the whole family helps out. In order to safeguard their quality, the potatoes are stored in a dark barn, walled off by bales of straw. Leo checks in on the potatoes every week. In spring, the potatoes are all sold off at once. But the farm’s customers can also enjoy the potatoes before then. Leo will be happy to retrieve a box of potatoes from the barn.

City sheep

The sheep do not leave the landscape completely bare, various grasses and flowers remain untouched. The numerous insects which find shelter there which would otherwise end up in the mowers disperse to other areas following the daily moving flock. Thus a varied ecological structure is created.

DIY drive

In his homemade asparagus harvester, he takes the two kilometre dike drive until he gets to the field. Seated only inches off the ground, he cuts the asparagus while driving. In warm weather asparagus can grow 15 cm a day so he goes for a second round in the evening.

Orchids online

With a single click he can tell the article number, date of transplant and the amount of trays for every plant. He can see how many trays a customer wants. He then assigns those trays and the system automatically generates all sales orders. Millions of orchids find their way into our livings rooms this way.
